Production Log - entry 5

Billboard is an international newsweekly magazine devoted to the music industry, and is one of the oldest trade magazines in the world. It maintains several internationally recognized music charts that track the most popular songs and albums in various categories on a weekly basis. The two most notable charts are the Billboard Hot 100, which ranks the top 100 songs regardless of genre and is based on digital sales, radio airplay, and internet streaming data; and the Billboard 200, the corresponding chart for album sales.

Colour

Colour by

This is a presentation of an analysis of the colour schemes of three music magazines. After analysing the covers, I have decided that a block colour background is the best option, therefore I will not use one of the photographs with the graffitti background as it will distract from the sell lines and other wording on the front cover. After careful consideration of my images, I will choose a colour that goes well with my photographs as well as the monotone colours of black and white, with the third shade used as an accent colour.

Magazine Name Ideas & Existing Names

In this presentation, I have analysed the names of existing music magazines of different genres such as the rock, pop and urban music.
This was very helpful when trying to decide on the name for my own magazine as I came to understand the different types of names (e.g. acronyms, onomatopoeic words etc.) and the way they are interporated by the readers.
I also came up with ideas for names for my magazine and analysed my final choices. In this analysis, I have included the reasons why I have chosen that name and the representation it will give to my magazine.

When choosing my magazine name, I wanted it to be something that relates to the urban genre, as that is the type of music and artists my magazine wil revolve around. I also wanted the name to seem relevant and up-to-date as my target audience will probably be 15-25 year olds, therefore it must appeal to this young audience.

Moodboard Movie

Here is my mood board for this course. I have decided to make a Hip Hop magazine, therefore I have used images of hip hop clothing, dance moves, artists and culture throughout the video. The background music in this video is a very famous hip-hop song called 'Ni**as in Paris' by Jay-Z and Kanye West (two very popular hip hop artists).
I decided to make my mood board in video form as I thought it seemed creative and believe that it is a better way to project the hip-hop style that my magazine will be based on.

Production Log - entry 4

Recently I have been wondering about what genre of music my magazine will be focused on. After seeing some photos on Facebook, I came across a location that caught my eye - Southbank skate park. The (legal) graffiti on the walls in that area would be a perfect backdrop for a hip-hop magazine. This gave me the idea to ask my friend, Jade to model for my magazine.
I will ask her to dress like a stereotypical hip hop artist e.g. rolled up jogging bottoms, a tank top, a 'snapback' cap and many large gold chains. This weekend I hope to visit a prop store to buy the gold chains and a large 'boombox'. If they have many other props to choose from, I would also like to buy a large candy cane, and possibly a pink wig, which I could use for other images in the magazine. That idea was inspired by Katy Perry in her California Girls music video. I believe it will give the cover model of my magazine an interesting and unique image and will definitely go well with a pop music theme.

Billboard Magazine front cover analysis

Billboard is a Music Magazine Aimed at a Target Audience of 16
Billboard magazine is one of the most famous music magazines. By analysing this front cover, I have been able to understand how to word the sell lines using puns, rhyming and other language techniques. I have also been able to understand how different colours can represent different emotions and can portray different things to the reader.

Production Log - entry 3

With technology moving faster than ever, different types of media are trying to catch up and stay relevant, making themselves more accessible to their audiences, for example, you can now tweet your views into X Factor, or follow the BBC News action on Facebook.
Music magazines have also picked up on this now and Billboard (a world famous, American music magazine) has launched its brand new iPhone and iPod touch app.
The application (available from the app store) can tell you who's on the latest charts, with records dating back 60 years and a self-refresh system which is programmed to give you the latest music news every Thursday. This allows the magazine readers to access latest information on the go, and will encourage them to buy Billboard magazine, instead of other music magazines out there.
When creating my magazine, I would also like to have an app that my audience can download to keep up with the latest information about the music industry.

Vibe Magazine front cover analysis

Vibe Front Cover Analysis

This is an analysis of Vibe magazine. It is an urban music magazine, just like the one I will produce. By analysing this front cover I have been able to understand the conventions of the front cover of a music magazine. Furthermore, it has taught me about the way a frontcover should be laid out and how the image on the cover can give of different suggestions about the artist and the magazine itself.

Preliminary Task

This is my front cover and contents page for my Preliminary Task.
To create my magazine, I took photographs of my classmates in different areas of the school. This location worked well for me as the magazine is centered around the school.
I used photoshop to create both the cover, and contents page, using different tools such as the text tool and the shape tool. I also used different effect such as a drop shaddow on the name of the magazine, 'Haydon News' in order to make it stand out against the rest of the text on the magazine.
The colour scheme I have chosen is blue and yellow, as these are the school colours, and I believe that they will represent Haydon well.
Furthermore, I used the gradient tool in order to create the background for the contents page. I thought this would make the contents page stand out to ensure that readers know that it is a very important and informative page in the magazine. Moreover, I imported the Haydon School logo from teh website, and removed the background using the colur range tool.

If I had more time, I would have made the magazine look more stylish by taking more photographs and in different locations. I would have also used different fonts to create the name of the magazine in order to make it unique and more interesting. Furthermore, I would have liked to use different effects on the images to add to the eye-catching fonts.
